HIRE MOVERS OR MOVE YOUR HOME BY YOURSELF?

HIRE MOVERS OR MOVE YOUR HOME BY YOURSELF?

Moving house is no small event. In fact, if not done properly, a move can easily become a logistics nightmare. Because of this, it can become tempting to hire a moving company to do all the dirty work of packing fragile items, loading a truck, and moving your belongings, for you. But is it worth spending money on hiring a moving company to help you in your move? Below, we list a few points to consider when deciding whether to hire a moving company or not.

Less Paperwork

Moving may require you to fill in lots of paperwork. Hiring a moving company will free you from some of these, because they will handle these themselves. If you are in doubt, ask your moving company if they will be handling paperwork such as moving permits.

Moving Expertise

When you hire a moving company, you are not only paying for manpower but for their expertise as well. Moving companies train their movers specifically on how to move various items such as art collections and glassware, so you can rest assured that they know what they are doing.

Time and Energy Saved

Imagine this: on the day of your move, you are still rushing to pack some last-minute things. The truck you hired to transport your belongings is running late. When it does get to your house, you find out that you will be the one driving because the driver had an emergency. Now, you would have to carry all your boxes from your house to the truck by yourself, unless you were able to call in some of your friends and neighbors to help you out. Then, you will have to spend time arranging and rearranging your belongings in the truck so that it all fits. By the time you are finished playing furniture-and-box-Tetris, you are exhausted. But you have yet to drive to your new home and unpack. When you finally arrive at your new home, you are bone-tired, but the day is far from over. Now, you will have to unpack and arrange all your belongings inside your new home.

Now imagine if you had instead hired a moving company to do most of the heavy lifting for you. Instead of spending several hours playing life-sized Tetris in the truck, you instead watch as the movers do the arranging and rearranging for you. And because they are professionally trained and have done this hundreds of times, what would take you several hours to accomplish takes them only an hour or even less. Next, they drive the truck containing your belongings right up to your new home. They unload your boxes and arrange your furniture according to where you ask for them to be placed. This latter scenario saves you a lot of time and energy!

Hiring a professional moving company to help you move allows you to save time and energy to settle into your new home. However, it will require you to spend a little more money than you would usually spend. Whether it is worth it or not also depends on if you think you (and any friends you have enlisted to help you out) can handle moving your belongings on your own. If your belongings do not include a grand piano, or a large number of fragile items, perhaps it is best if you move them yourself.

Ultimately, only you can decide if the money you shell out hiring a moving company is worth the time and energy you save as a result.
